About this document

Understanding Sound Shadows in Acoustics by Kritarth Jaiswal is a document available to read on EtoBox.

An acoustic shadow or sound shadow is an area where sound waves fail to propagate due to obstructions like buildings, wind currents, or sound barriers. In a short-distance acoustic shadow behind an object, the initial sound wave is cut off but diffraction allows some sound to bend around the object, reducing the amplitude. A long-distance acoustic shadow can occur when atmospheric conditions form sound refraction channels, allowing sound to travel long distances without reaching intervening locations.
