Sweet Honey in the Rock is an a cappella ensemble of five African American women singers that will be performing for students. Their music has roots in African American spirituals and celebrates African and African American culture. Spirituals originated as songs slaves would sing to cope with hardship and send secret messages. They later took on new meaning during the Civil Rights movement as protesters sang them to inspire hope. The performance will explore the history and traditions of spirituals.
