This text on otologic surgical techniques is designed to serve as a reference for both residents-in-training and clinicians. It is composed of contributions from many well-respected otologists, as well as experts in related specialities. One need not look any farther than the first chapter, "Otologic Instrumentation," to recognize that this book will hold true to its goal. Most of the chapters focus heavily on the operative techniques of otology. Appropriate attention is also paid to indications, postoperative care, pitfalls, and complications. When included, the discussions of relevant pathophysiology, embryology, et cetera, are generally brief and enhance the operative issues. The illustrations are original, black and white sketches that accurately present the anatomy and surgical concepts. There are no glaring deficiencies in content. There is a moderate amount of overlap in some areas, such as the management of chronic otitis media and otosclerosis. Most authors present their individual approaches, and exposure to a variety of viewpoints on these topics is very helpful. A few chapters present a particular author's viewpoints alone and alternative approaches are not addressed. I
