An incident that took place in 839/40 provides the next key moment in the horseman's biography. 2 That year the horseman caused the emperor Theophilos (829-42) and the residents of Constantinople tremendous concern by dropping its gilded toupha, the plumed helmet-crown. 3 There was much more to this incident than initially meets the eye. The horseman's behavior was interpreted as an ominous, foreboding action. This episode reveals how the emperor and Byzantine viewers endowed the monument with agency.
