Nicolas Wynman wrote the first swimming book "Colymbetes" in 1538. Depictions of swimming date back to prehistoric times with drawings found in an Egyptian cave. The modern Olympic era began in 1896 when swimming became an Olympic sport, with six events held in the 1896 Athens Games. Richard Cavill improved the Trudgen stroke by introducing the flutter kick after observing native swimmers in 1902.
