Cathodic protection involves polarizing metal surfaces to more negative potentials to slow or stop corrosion. Full protection of steel is usually achieved at potentials more negative than -800 mV vs Ag/AgCl in seawater or -850 mV vs Cu/CuSO4 in soil.
