Birthplace of sailor, John Clark (1758-1833), who settled in the backwoods of South Carolina before moving to Georgia where he became a Methodist preacher. He became a travelling evangelist and was well known for preaching against slavery. He moved to Illinois and became a schoolteacher and also joined a group called the "Friends of Humanity" which was outspoken in its campaign against slavery.
