What is Celebrating the Nativity about?

Learn about Celebrating the Nativity with iMindsJNR learning series for younger minds. Every year you probably celebrate Christmas on 25 December. Someone may have told you that this is the day of Jesus' birth. But nobody actually knows when he was born! The Bible does not give us a date for the birth of Jesus. So early Christians took the date of important ancient festivals and placed Christmas around the same time. Before Christianity, the Romans had a winter festival called Saturnalia, which took place for one week in mid-December. And on 25 December some Romans also celebrated the birthday of Mithras, who was the Persian god of the sun. The Anglo-Saxons of England also had a winter celebration. In December they celebrated the hopeful rebirth of the sun after dark winter days. So Christians began celebrating the birth of a different type of son – the Son of God – at the same time of year. Christmas was first officially celebrated on 25 December in the fourth century. iMindsJNR offers 6 main categories for ages 7-14years including General Knowledge, Geography & Nature, Famous People, Science & Maths, The Arts and History.
