What is Breeding Climate-resilience Crops for Future Agriculture about?
Abiotic stresses [water availability (less or excess water), salinity, temperature extremes (freezing, cold, or high), metal, nutrient stress, etc.] are major constraints in the global agriculture industry, resulting in significant yield reductions of our staple food crops. The world population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, which would be about a challenging scenario to feed billions of people with limited cultivable lands. Almost 80% of the food consumed by the world population comes from limited food crops such as rice, wheat, maize, and soybean and are threatened by current climatic shocks. Food sustainability requires diversification of food crops, more particularly neglected and underutilized crops such as millets and quinoa, and the inherent traits available for abiotic stress tolerance helps breeders accelerate the development, deployment, and diffusion of climate-resilient and nutritionally enriched crop varieties. Millets and quinoa are major food and feed sources in the developing world, especially in the arid and semiarid tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Millets and quinoa thus could grow and would produce optimal yield as compared to others under harsh c
