An early reference to marbling in China is found in a 10th century text describing decorative "drifting-sand paper" made in Sichuan by dragging paper through fermented flour paste mixed with dyes. A second type used paste from honey locust pods with croton oil and water. Ginger was used to disperse the colors. The oldest example of Japanese suminagashi marbled paper dates to the 12th century.
