A siphon is a tube in an inverted U-shape that causes liquid to flow uphill and above the surface of a reservoir without pumps through the pull of gravity as the liquid flows down the tube. Atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid up the tube into the region of reduced pressure at the top, allowing it to flow from high to low. While most common siphons use water or mercury, other fluids like organic liquids or carbon dioxide can also be siphoned.
