What is Ancient Greece: Olympic Games Overview about?

The Olympic Games took place in the ancient Greek city of Olympia and were an important sign of Greek identity. Originally only Greek athletes competed, but later participants from all over the Mediterranean region joined, though only men. Events included races, jumping, discus and javelin throwing, horse riding and wrestling. Along with sports, there were also religious ceremonies and poetry and speaking competitions. Winners received a crown of laurels and had their statue placed in Olympia.
