DNA is made up of two strands that wind around each other in a double helix shape. Each strand contains a backbone of alternating sugar and phosphate groups with nitrogen bases attached. There are three types of DNA structures - A, B, and Z - with B being the most common form that is a right-handed double helix. DNA contains the genetic instructions for cells and is made up of nucleotides consisting of a phosphate, sugar, and one of four nitrogen bases.
