Van der Waals forces are intermolecular forces between molecules that include London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole forces, and hydrogen bonding. London dispersion forces exist between all molecules due to the uneven distribution of electrons at any given moment. Dipole-dipole forces occur between molecules with permanent dipoles, such as HCl. Hydrogen bonding is the strongest van der Waals force and occurs when hydrogen bonds to highly electronegative atoms like nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine.
