The Western Roman Empire fell due to a combination of internal problems and external invasions. The empire had grown too large to effectively govern and defend, leaving it vulnerable to attacks from Germanic tribes from the north and the Persian empire from the east. Additionally, too many citizens served in the military, leaving fewer people to farm and support the empire economically. These weaknesses ultimately led to the sack of Rome by Visigoth invaders in 410 and the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
