Rizal secretly departed for Spain in 1882 to study medicine. He enrolled in several courses at the University of Madrid and also studied painting, sculpture, and languages. He lived frugally but was occasionally troubled by lack of funds due to hard times back in the Philippines. He completed his medical degree in 1884 and philosophy degree in 1885, achieving high marks.
