In 1969, Greg Taylor, an overweight 21 year old man is drafted in the army. After 17 weeks of basic and MP training, Greg comes home 79 pounds lighter only to hear from his girlfriend, Terry that she doesnt want to see him again. At his first duty station, Aberdeen Proving Ground, he meets and falls in love with Susan James, the daughter of a colonel. He breaks up with her after he finds out she has been dishonest with him. His dark side comes out during a raid later that evening. He is sent to Vietnam, where on his first night out on the road, his partner is killed in front of his eyes. A few weeks later, Greg is once again nearly killed by a knife wielding prisoner. After the incident, he is reunited with a nurse he knew back in The World. Sharon Andrews and Greg begin a stormy, illicit relationship. Fraternization between enlisted personnel and officers is illegal in the eyes of the army. Their relationship grows and they become engaged, leaving Vietnam together.
