What is Metallothionein and Metal Regulation in Mammals about?

Metallothionein (MT) is a low molecular weight protein that was first identified in equine kidney as a cadmium-binding protein. MT contains cysteine residues that allow it to bind metals like zinc, copper, and cadmium. MT expression is regulated by the transcription factor MTF-1 binding to metal response elements in the MT gene. While zinc can reversibly activate MTF-1, other metals like cadmium induce MT expression. In mammals, four MT isoforms are expressed with MT1 and MT2 being ubiquitous and MT3 and MT
