Notmber 1958.-While the psychic background of the "fibrositis syndrome" is well recognized, although incompletely documented, the signficant association of this syndrome with other musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis, is generally not appreciated by the clinician. Hench and othm have believed that the "fibrositis" was secondary to "degenerative" joint disease. Studies by my colleagues and me, however, indicate that the same traumatic emotional background responsible for the "fibrositis" is also important in the genesis and persistence of activity of some cases of systemic osteoarthritis.
