a pamphlet entitled "The Left-Wing Manifesto," which was published by the left wing of the Socialist Party, organized in June of 1919 in New York City. Advocating a radical socialism in his manifesto, Gitlow was convicted of promoting criminal anarchy under a New York statute and sentenced to 5-10 years in prison, a sentence sustained by the US Supreme Court. Holmes dissented. Mendenhall dwells on considerations of Holmes' grammar and syntax as examples of Emersonian superfluity, but secondary sources are again relied on to link the dissent to a "marketplace of ideas" metaphor (18-22). Interestingly, while Mendenhall converts a large portion of the dissent into verse to better explore its Emersonian qualities, he omits the sentence that immediately follows his transcription: "If in the long run the beliefs expressed in proletarian dictatorship are destined to be accepted by the dominant forces of the community, the only meaning of free speech is that they should be given their chance and have their way" (Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., The Dissenting Opinions of Mr. Justice Holmes, ed.
