What is Methods for Exploiting the Relationship Between Buildings and Their Shadows in Aerial Imagery about?
Abtruct -Computational techniques for utilizing the relationship between shadows and man-made structures to aid in the automatic extraction of man-made structures from aerial imagery is described. Four methods aTe described that the prediction of shrcture shape, grouping of related structures, verification of individual structures, and structure height estimation. In each method the relationship between structure and cast shadows is exploited in a unique fashion. Key issues involve the accurate localization Of the edge, and attribution of shadow segments to structure hypotheses. Several examples that show how each method is used within the task of building detection, delineation, and height estimation are presented.without the necessity of developing an explicit model of the structure. ~i~~~ the great variability of building shapes, heights, and structures, it is difficult to imagine how an model-based approach to interpretation would function without first having some scene analysis cues to constrain search while matching models. This work focuses on the generation and refinement of such Scene and *e A. Previous Work I. INTRODUCTION HE extraction of man-made structures in complex
