The Friar begins telling a tale about an archdeacon who strictly enforced church laws and gathered wealth from punishing sinners. The archdeacon employed a cunning summoner to help find more people to punish. The summoner was corrupt and worked with prostitutes to extort money from people. One day, while out summoning a woman, the summoner meets a yeoman who claims to also be a bailiff. They become "sworn brothers" but the yeoman reveals he is actually a fiend from hell, sent to trick the corrupt summoner.
