What is Occupation and Its Aftermath about?
Iraq and the United States, Historical Background The US designs to replace the British influence in the Middle East goes far back as 1945, the year World War II came to an end. At that time, the US policy makers began to look at their country as the main international power that saved not only Europe, but the world at large from Nazi Germany. Thus, they felt that most of the privileges acquired by the old European Empires, especially in the Middle East, had to be revised. For the US ruling elite, it was not acceptable to keep the United States sidelined and deprived from having a share in the natural wealth of, and presence in the colonies dominated by the European powers following World War I. Thus, the 1950s witnessed United States attempts to take advantage of the decline of British and French power in the Middle East.
