This document describes a new species of ponytail palm, Beaucarnea sanctomariana, which is endemic to the tropical dry forests of the Chimalapas region in Oaxaca, Mexico. B. sanctomariana is similar to B. recurvata and B. hiriartiae but differs in having smaller flowers and fruits (the smallest in the genus), pedicels that articulate in the middle for both male and female flowers, as well as narrower undulate bracts on the inflorescence for B. recurvata and shorter leaves and widely conical trunk bases for
