What is New 447 Area Code for Illinois 217 about?

The Illinois Commerce Commission has announced a new 447 area code will overlay the existing 217 region to address the depletion of available phone prefixes. Conservation efforts had delayed the need for a new area code by 18 years, but 447 prefixes will begin being issued in 2021. Current phone customers will keep their 217 numbers, but new customers may receive 447 numbers. During a transition period, callers will need to dial 10-digit numbers with the area code for all calls within the 217 region.
