This study proposes a novel strategy for decarbonizing crude oil distillation by integrating a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with the topping section of a refinery in Sicily. The approach could reduce CO2 emissions by 54.2 kt/year and methane by 19.9 kt/year, achieving an economic return on investment of 16.2%. Comparatively, using the same land for photovoltaic production of green hydrogen yields lower emissions savings and a reduced return on investment.
