Guru Jambheshwar Ji founded the Bishnoi sect in 1485 in India to promote environmental conservation. His teachings, contained in the Shabadvani, establish 29 principles including 8 that strictly prohibit killing animals, cutting trees, and promote conservation. As one of the earliest environmentalists, Jambheshwar linked protection of nature to religious philosophy and encouraged compassion for all living things. His principles taught respect for biodiversity and influence modern environmental philosophies.
