Sputum induction and gastric lavage were performed on 250 young children in South Africa to compare the diagnostic yield for pulmonary tuberculosis between the two methods. Sputum induction produced a positive smear or culture in 54 children, while gastric lavage was positive in 40 children, showing sputum induction had a higher diagnostic yield.
