What is MERLIN Road Roughness Testing Method about?

The MERLIN device measures road surface roughness by using two feet spaced 1.8 meters apart and a probe in the middle to measure mid-chord deviations. 200 measurements are taken at regular intervals along a road stretch and the positions of a pointer on a chart are recorded. The roughness value is determined by measuring the spacing between the 10th and 11th crosses counted from each end of the distribution of pointer positions on the chart. This provides a roughness value in millimeters on the Merlin scale
