This study evaluates the risk of esophageal cancer (EC) in individuals with achalasia compared to those without, utilizing a matched cohort from the Veterans Affairs Achalasia Cohort. Results indicate that individuals with achalasia have a significantly higher incidence of EC, with a hazard ratio of 4.6, and a median time from achalasia diagnosis to EC development of 3.0 years. The findings suggest that patients with achalasia may benefit from increased surveillance for esophageal cancer.
