What is Understanding Seismic Waves: P, S, Surface about?
Primary waves, secondary waves, and surface waves are the three types of seismic waves produced by earthquakes. Primary waves are the fastest and arrive first, traveling at around 5 km/s through solids, liquids, and gases by pushing and pulling particles. Secondary waves arrive second, traveling around half as fast as primary waves by shaking particles up and down or side to side, and cannot pass through liquids or gases. Surface waves cause the largest ground movements and travel most slowly along Earth
