What is Battle of Maldon: Viking vs. Anglo-Saxon about?

The Battle of Maldon took place between Vikings led by Anlaf and Anglo-Saxons led by Earl Byrhtnoth, also known as Brithnoth. The Vikings demanded payment to withdraw after raiding the Essex coast, but Brithnoth refused. When the tide went out, Brithnoth allowed the Vikings to cross the river to fight on land. Initially the Anglo-Saxons held firm, but after Brithnoth was killed by a poisoned spear, some fled while others fought around his body until the end.
