A gene chip, or microarray, is a small square chip that can detect diseases by testing gene patterns from patients. Each gene chip contains over 400,000 cells with DNA from different human genes. By measuring RNA levels, gene chips can differentiate gene expression between normal and malignant cells to identify genes active in cancer but not normal cells.
