What is Herculaneum Papyri Revealed by X-ray Imaging about?

X-ray phase-contrast tomography (XPCT) was used to image two Herculaneum papyri scrolls without unrolling them. XPCT revealed various letters hidden inside the rolled papyri that were previously unreadable due to the similar densities of carbonized papyrus and carbon-based ink. This non-destructive technique opens opportunities to read many Herculaneum scrolls still rolled up and enhance knowledge of ancient Greek literature and philosophy without risking further damage to the fragile papyri.
