Southern England – 1964 The aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, pride of the Royal Navy, is embarking on a long tour that will take the mighty vessel on a voyage halfway around the world. At sea for the first time, Naval Airman Danny Smart feels as though the entire world lies at his feet. The demands of the flight deck are arduous, but Danny throws himself into it – the noise, the sights, the danger; and his love for the Buccaneers of 800 Squadron confirms that he has the best job in the world. Everything would be perfect, were it not for Leading Airman Nutall, who has decided to make Danny’s life as miserable as possible. A bully to the younger sailors, Nutall treats many as if they were his servants, breaking the bonds of friendship essential to the smooth running of the carrier. When possessions start to go missing on board, Danny becomes obsessed with discovering the identity of the thief, and is drawn into a murky and sinister world of lies and betrayal. With Nutall as his enemy, Danny needs all the friends he can get.
