What is Importance and Threats of Mangroves about?
Our new exhibit gives visitors a view of a simulated mangrove ecosystem in a large tank and includes a live red mangrove exhibit. Mangroves are found along tropical and subtropical coasts globally and have specialized root structures and leaf adaptations that allow them to thrive in intertidal zones. Mangroves are important for shoreline protection, habitat, and climate change but are threatened by habitat loss, coastal development, seafood aquaculture, and pollution.
