The Pythagorean theorem states that for any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. While knowledge of the theorem appears in ancient Babylonian, Hindu, and Chinese works predating Pythagoras, he is credited as the first to prove it. Pythagoras founded a school in Croton that studied mathematics and the mystical relationships between numbers. The brotherhood grew politically powerful but was later burned down and dispersed.
