What is Learner Engagement in SCMC Modes about?
This study investigated how the mode of synchronous computer communication (text chat vs video chat) and familiarity with interaction partners impacts learner engagement in a second language task. The study also examined whether higher learner engagement leads to better quality joint writing produced after the interaction. Familiar dyads and those using video chat showed higher engagement. Different measures of engagement during interaction predicted better subsequent text quality.
