Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a day for families to gather and people travel to be with family. The tradition started with the Pilgrim Fathers, who were Puritan settlers that founded the Plymouth colony in 1620 after fleeing religious persecution in England aboard the Mayflower. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Native Americans in 1621 to give thanks for a successful harvest after a difficult first winter in the new land.
