What is Understanding Ground Effect in Aviation about?

Ground effect refers to the increased lift and decreased drag experienced by an aircraft flying close to the ground. When within about one wingspan of the ground, wingtip vortices cannot form properly due to interference from the ground. This reduces induced drag and allows for lower takeoff speeds and a floating sensation during landing approaches. Care must be taken to avoid sinking during takeoff or floating down the runway during landing while in ground effect.
