The UPA government approved a 17-30% hike in wages for laborers under MGNREGA effective January 1, 2011 based on recommendations from the National Advisory Council and various ministries. The wage increase will benefit over 5 crore beneficiaries across India and is based on either the consumer price index for agricultural labor or the actual wage rate from April 2009, whichever is higher. The additional cost of 3,500 crore rupees for the wage revision until March will be met by the government.
