What is Pre‐traveller typhoid vaccinations for Australian children visiting friends and relatives overseas. A call to (inject) arms about?

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in international travellers cause a significant burden on health services at an individual and societal level. 1 One of the most common VPDs globally in travellers is typhoid and paratyphoid fever, collectively referred to as 'enteric fever'. 2 Enteric fever is a potentially life-threatening acute febrile illness, with a global burden of disease disproportionally affecting children. It is characterised by bacteraemic febrile illnesses caused by Salmonella enterica, subsp. enterica serotype Typhi (Salmonella typhi) or serotype Paratyphi A, B or C (Salmonella paratyphi) with children typically presenting with prolonged fever, malaise and abdominal pain. 2 Global estimates demonstrate that the incidence, mortality and morbidity of enteric fever is highest among children <15 years, peaking in the 5-9 year age group. 3 It is common for foreign-born Australian residents and their children to travel to their country of origin for the purpose of 'visiting friends and relatives' (VFR). 1 VFR travellers are less likely to seek pre-travel advice or vaccination, despite their accompanying children comprising the largest risk group of paediatric typhoid cases
