About this document
Understanding Negative Polarity Items by andre_blaj1982 is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Negative polarity items (NPIs) such as "any" can only occur in negative contexts or with downward entailing quantifiers like "no" and "few". NPIs are licensed by these elements if they c-command the NPI. Positive polarity items (PPIs) differ in that they cannot be c-commanded by downward entailing elements and require an affirmative context. Examples of NPIs and PPIs and the environments in which they are licensed are discussed.
