Jayanta Mahapatra is an Indian English poet born in 1928 in Cuttack, India. He had a career as a physics teacher before retiring in 1986. Mahapatra published his first book of poems in 1971 relatively late in life at age 43. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern Indian English poetry. Some of his notable poetry collections include A Rain of Rites, Life Signs, and A Whiteness of Bone.
