Foreign investors held an interest in nearly 37.6 million acres of U.S. agricultural land as of December 31, 2020, according to a report by the USDA. This represents 2.9% of privately held agricultural land in the U.S. and 1.7% of all land. Forest land accounted for 46% of foreign-held acreage, cropland for 29%, and pasture land for 23%. Foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land has increased each year since 2015, averaging nearly 2.2 million additional acres annually.
