Günter Grass is a German novelist, poet, playwright, and sculptor who was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was born in 1927 in the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) and came to West Germany as a homeless refugee in 1945. Grass is best known for his first novel The Tin Drum, published in 1959, which was the first part of his Danzig Trilogy and was adapted into an award-winning film in 1979.
