About this document
Impact of Sahel Droughts on Mauritania by Mark J is a document available to read on EtoBox.
The great Sahel droughts of the early 1970s caused massive devastation in Mauritania and exacerbated poverty and conflict. In response, the dominant Arab elites increased pressure to Arabize many aspects of Mauritanian life, such as law and education. This was a reaction both to changing circumstances from the drought as well as a reaction against French colonial rule. Various models were suggested to maintain cultural diversity but none were successfully implemented.
