What is 173: Functional Outcome Following an Acute Ischemic Stroke: Sex Differences about?

Study Objectives: To investigate whether a sex difference exists in the improvement of the functional outcome at 3 and 6 or 12 months after hospital dismissal for an acute ischemic stroke. Methods: Using a prospective registry, all patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) were enrolled. Demographics, initial vital signs, laboratory values, stroke severity (NIH stroke scale), ischemic stroke subtype and modified Rankin score (mRS) at hospital dismissal were recorded. After dismissal the patients were contacted by telephone at 3, 6 and 12 months to administer an IRB approved phone script to calculate functional status. Functional outcome at the various time points was determined using the same mRS. A linear regression model was fit to determine if sex was a predictor of improvement in functional status (measured as change in mRS since hospital discharge) at 3 and 6 or 12 months. Results: The study cohort comprised 37 patients (57% male) with a mean age of 68.3 years Ϯ16.9 SD who presented to the ED with AIS between July 2005 to February 2006 and authorized research and phone call follow-up. The cohort had a median NIHSS of 4 and mean NI
