What is Mind and Its Relation to the Psyche-Soma about?
Winnicott studies the concept of mind as part of the study of a total individual from the beginning of psychosomatic existence. If the individual body schema is satisfactory in the very early developmental stages, mind is no more than a special case of the functioning of the psyche-soma. For healthy development there is an initial need for a perfect environment, so that continuity of being is not disturbed. Certain kinds of maternal failure produce over-activity of mental functioning and a mind-psyche which is pathological. Some persons regard mental functioning as their enemy and falsely localize their mental functioning in their heads so a leucotomy seems to be what the patient wants, namely, relief from mind activity. This is the patient’s equating of mind and brain. The true self, a continuity of being, is based on psyche-soma growth. Mental activity is a special case of the functioning of the psyche-soma, and intact brain functioning is the basis for being as well as for mental activity.
