The Golden Gate Bridge uses a structural system of two large steel towers that carry compression loads, connected by two main galvanized carbon steel cables that carry tension loads. Over 250 pairs of suspender cables connect the main cables to the bridge deck. The total weight of the main and suspender cables is 24,500 tons.
